Forget costly dental work, or damaging products that could be doing more harm than good by stripping your teeth of that vital layer of protective enamel. There are a number of things you can do in the privacy of your own home that don’t cost the Earth or require invasive equipment. It just takes a little extra time and a willingness to cultivate new, healthy habits.
The first, and most obvious thing is to brush your teeth regularly. Food particles collect in the gaps between teeth after meals, and, if not cleaned away, the food particles get converted to lactic acid. The lactic acid, in turn, attacks your tooth enamel, causing tooth decay and cavities. Therefore, remember to brush after every meal, or at least twice a day. This is perhaps the most important thing you can do you help maintain a healthy smile. Remember to use the correct type of toothbrush, as your will be using it every day. Soft-bristled tooth brushes will prevent the gums from becoming scratched and damaged, whilst bristles that are too hard can cause the gums to bleed, sometimes resulting in oral infections. M-shaped bristles are often recommended to ensure that the brush takes the shape of the teeth into account, allowing the bristles to reach all parts, thereby removing plaque and debris-especially in the gaps.
Also, remember to gently massage your gums, as plague generally collects along the gum line. By gently massaging the gums, you remove any collected plaque and improve blood circulation to your gums, helping them to stay healthy. And healthy gums mean healthy teeth!
You can also use a tongue cleaner, which can be bought inexpensively in most drugstores or from your local dental practice. Most oral bacterial accumulates on the tongue, therefore, cleaning your tongue regularly will get rid of bacteria, food particles and dead cells, helping you maintain good oral hygiene, as well as fresh breath. In fact, many people with bad breath are unaware that their tongue may well be the culprit.
Finally, proper diet is also important to help maintain healthy teeth. It stands to reason that over-sugary food and drinks taken too regularly will cause dental problems. Foods high in calcium and phosphorous (the principal constituents of teeth) will help to keep teeth healthy. Sesame and sunflower seeds are particularly good. Raw foods are also good, as the friction required to break from down in the mouth removes plaque and keeps gums firm.
